New review: The Witches
I promised a complete re-appraisal of Hammer’s 1966 film The Witches, and here it is.
Must say, it the old review was another example of me doing a film a great wrong… The Witches may not be the last word in extreme terror, but it IS far more entertaining than I’d previously suggested.
In fact, it’s probably the victim of the most damage I’ve done to a film’s reputation, as this was one of the old reviews that got picked up and quoted in a proper book (I’ll share what this was in a later post) - something along the lines of it being “boring and slow-moving, things that a horror film should never be”.
In fact, The Witches is a bit of a romp, with a nutty central performance from Joan Fontaine, some great scenes and a frankly bonkers last few moments. From my point of view, a neglected classic. You probably already knew how great it was.
